Northern Pacific: Driving the Last Spike

Powered by Zoomify
©? Artist’s conception of the “driving of the last spike” ceremonies held at Gold Creek, Montana, September 8, 1883. This photo was made from a painting which in turn was made from a series of actual photos taken at the celebration. Many noted business leaders, government officials and foreign dignitaries were present. General U.S. Grant is holding the spike mall. At his left is Henry Villard, the president of the Northern Pacific. The ceremony marked completion of NP’s main line from Lake Superior to the Northern Pacific Coast. ©?
